Liposuction in Northern VA
Liposuction is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the U.S. It effectively sculpts the body by removing undesirable fat from target areas that have not responded to diet and exercise. These critical areas include the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, chin, cheeks, neck and upper arms.
The procedure takes as little as an hour or as much as five hours. It all depends on the amount of fat that will be removed. Liposuction procedures are common and have been successfully done for many years. Trust Belmont Plastic Surgery when looking for the best liposuction Northern VA has to offer.

1) What is liposuction?
Liposuction (referred as lipoplasty) removes excess body fat through multiple small incisions. It does not correct excess skin problems. Liposuction is common and used as a complementary technique to other procedures, such as body contouring. Different methods employed by that plastic surgeons in performing liposuction include ultrasound-assisted lipectomy (UAL) and suction-assisted lipectomy (SAL). How it works: fluid is injected into the area of the body that is being treated, a tiny incision is made in an inconspicuous place as possible and a cannula (small tube) breaks up the fat layer and suctions it out.
2) What are the steps of the liposuction procedure?
A general anesthetic or sedative is administered before small incisions are made at inconspicuous points near the targeted areas. Sterile solution minimizes bleeding and trauma. The cannula is placed within each hole to sweep and dislodge the excess fat from the connective tissue. Using a syringe or surgical vacuum, the excess fat gets suctioned up through the cannula. The incisions are closed.
3) What happens after the liposuction procedure?
Compression garments and elastic bandages control the swelling that occurs after surgery. Occasionally, it may be necessary to insert small drains in the incisions to remove excess fluids. Swelling should subside after a week and the bruising after three weeks. You can return to work in a few days and resume normal activities in one to two weeks.
4) Are there any risks or side effects to getting liposuction?
Effective and thorough communication prior to and following the procedure can help prevent risks involving the appearance of the final body shape and contour. Like any other surgical procedure, the side effects are rare but can include nerve damage, blood clots, scarring, pain, swelling or heart and lung complications. There is the risk of bleeding, infection and poor wound healing. Belmont Plastic Surgery strives to provide the safest liposuction Northern VA has available to residents.
Additional Liposuction Options & Techniques
VASERlipo (Vaser Liposuction):
Vaser Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction is another option for patients. Vaser Liposuction uses minimally invasive ultrasound technology for precision body contouring. VASERlipo produces eye-catching results in just one procedure. The technology provides many benefits as opposed to the more traditional liposuction treatments. By targeting fat in various regions of the body, ultrasonic waves break up and separate fat cells for removal. Surrounding tissue is unharmed and patients generally experience less pain and potential bruising.
Key benefits of VASERlipo:
- Produce eye-catching results in a single procedure
- Easily remove large amounts of stored fat
- Smooth skin even in delicate areas like the arms and neck
- Refine and accentuate the appearance of muscles
With VASERlipo, a small probe transmits ultrasonic sound energy to break up the fat upon contact. The liquefied fat is suctioned out to preserve surrounding vessels and nerves.
MicroAire’s PAL® LipoSculptor™ is the only US-patented liposuction instrument using a reciprocating motion (rather than rotating) to facilitate the movement of the cannula within tissue. Power assisted liposuction (PAL) uses a motorized cannula to remove body fat in a significantly speedier and safer way than traditional wands. PAL’s small and quick vibrations break up fat cells to be suctioned out. With this technique, a greater amount of fat can be removed in a faster amount of time.
PAL’s vibrating tip allows for safer liposuction due to its small and precise motions. Surgeons like Dr. Feledy can target specific areas without damaging surrounding tissue reducing the amount of manual force and physical effort required to perform lipoplasty, especially in areas with fibrous tissue. This makes for a more comfortable experience for you, the patient.
Unlike ultrasonic and laser lipoplasty devices, the PAL® LipoSculptor™ does not use heat meaning no accidental burns. The fat cells are just as healthy and viable as cells harvested using manual liposuction.
With a PAL procedure, patients experience a gentler procedure with a larger amount of fat being removed. Not to mention there is less bruising and damage to surrounding tissue. Best part? A speedier recovery.
