DIEP, "Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforatorsis," is an advanced free-flap breast reconstruction technique that uses the patient’s own body tissues.
Part of its name refers to the blood supply for the tissue flap that is transferred from the abdomen to the new breast during surgery. This procedure is done in combination with a breast implant. It is one of several breast reconstruction procedures performed by Dr. Feledy and Dr. Maiorino, who are considered by many to be among the best breast reconstruction surgeon Northern VA has to offer.
Life-Saving Procedure
The surgical removal of a breast is known as mastectomy and can be a life-saving procedure for breast cancer patients. But it often leaves patients feeling incomplete and insecure. The DIEP Flap reconstruction surgery allows breast cancer survivors to recover an important part of being a woman by restoring the appearance of the breast. DIEP flap reconstruction is a method that restores the breast or breasts after a mastectomy has removed a cancer. By utilizing the patient’s own tissue, the shape and appearance of a breast can be restore.
Regain The Beautifully Contoured Breast
After a mastectomy, patients often pursue reconstructive surgery to regain the beautifully contoured breast taken by surgery. DIEP flap reconstruction is not recommended for patients who are obese, smoke cigarettes, suffer from psychological instability, and have had previous surgery on the abdomen. Breast reconstruction and mastectomy can often be performed at the same time. Some women choose to wait until they heal from mastectomy surgery and additional cancer treatments.
Create A Breast Mount
After anesthesia has been administered, Dr. Feledy will surgically remove tissue from your abdomen, graft it to the breast site and place a breast implant to create a breast mount. Once the structures are in place, he will use techniques that reconstruct the nipple and areola before suturing the incisions.
The Breast Shape Improves
Dr. Feledy or Dr. Maiorino may place a temporary fluid drainage tube under the skin. Gauze or bandages are applied to your incisions. You will receive an elastic bandage or support bra to minimize swelling and unnecessary movement. Healing will continue over the course of a month as swelling decreases and the breast shape improves. Be sure to follow Dr. Feledy’s or Dr. Maiorino's instructions, including regular follow-up visits to check the health of your new breast.
New Appearances
Patients should know that reconstructed breasts will not have the same appearance or feel as the old breast. Faint scars will always be visible wherever surgical incisions have been made. Most Northern VA Diep flap reconstruction patients feel that this is a small price to pay when considering the physical and emotional benefits of DIEP flap reconstruction in Northern VA.

DIEP flap reconstruction techniques usually require a breast implant to complete the appearance of the breast. Saline implants are filled with a saltwater solution to varying amounts. Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel and feel more natural. Dr. Feledy can discuss the choice between different types of breast implants.
