Dermabrasion Treatments

Dermabrasion is a skin resurfacing technique that treats many signs of skin aging by using a controlled method of surgical scraping to remove the outer layers of skin.

Dermabrasion treats wrinkles and sun damage, and corrects skin tone and texture. By removing the irregularities present in the rougher outer layers of skin, dermabrasion reveals the softer, younger-looking skin beneath.

Effective Treatment

What does dermabrasion do?

Extremely effective for a variety of skin types and purposes, dermabrasion is often used to treat scarring left from accidents or previous surgery. Acne scars can be removed through dermabrasion, as can pre-cancerous growths known as keratoses.

Dermabrasion treatments are more aggressive than microdermabrasion, but also lead to more significant results. There is a recovery time associated with the procedure, but the results are significant and long-lasting. Dermabrasion may be used in a small section of the skin or on the entire face. It is an effective stand-alone treatment, and is often used alongside other procedures, including chemical peels, facelift, scar revision or scar removal. Dermabrasion may help improve the appearance of your skin as well as your self-confidence.

Dermabrasion Procedure

What are the steps of the Dermabrasion procedure?

Performed on either an outpatient or inpatient basis, dermabrasion begins with numbing of the area using local anesthesia and a sedative. Using a wire brush or a diamond-tipped burr, the outer layers of skin are scraped away by the surgeon. This procedure continues through multiple layers of skin until the ideal layer is reached. Following a skin cleansing, an ointment, wet dressing or dry treatment is applied to the face. Dermabrasion can take anywhere from ten minutes to an hour and a half.

All Ages and Skin Types

Who is an ideal candidate for Dermabrasion?

Patients of all ages and skin types may be excellent candidates for dermabrasion, however, darker complexions may be more likely to experience blotching or discoloration after treatment. Those with sensitive skin may experience rashes, blisters or cold sores. Patients with freckles may experience an alteration or loss of freckles in specific areas. Those with active acne, cold sores or sunburn may have to wait until their skin has returned to a normal state prior to the dermabrasion procedure.

Dermabrasion Recovery

Following Dermabrasion Northern VA patients may experience some redness, swelling and tightness. There may be some tingling and itching that can be controlled through prescriptions. Swelling will go down in a few days, and scabs will form over the treated areas. As the new skin grows in, itching may be a concern. After two weeks, normal activities may be resumed, though intense exercise should be avoided for four to six weeks to protect the new skin. In addition, the skin must be protected from sun for up to six months.
