A Result Of Development
Otoplasty is the surgical reshaping of the ear tissue, a procedure undertaken because the ears are imbalanced, disproportionately large or small, damaged by birth defect, overtly protruding or have been injured in an accident.
All of these factors are treatable through otoplasty. This procedure helps children by correcting birth defects or abnormalities that have become more pronounced as a result of development.
Natural And Balanced Shape
Otoplasty or ear pinning is a plastic surgery procedure performed on the outer ear to reshape and correct protruding ears. Dr. Feledy removes cartilage and skin behind your ears and uses permanent sutures under the skin to pin back your ears. This type of surgery gives your ears a natural and balanced shape which fits to the rest of your face. With an ear pinning surgery, you will feel different and have more confidence. It’s amazing what effect even a slight correction can have as you meet family and friends on the weekend. Otoplasty rarely has any effect on hearing. It is performed exclusively for cosmetic reasons.
Effective Procedure
Otoplasty is an effective procedure for children and adults alike. Children can be excellent otoplasty candidates as long as they are healthy and free of serious illness or chronic ear infections. It’s important to talk to your child and discuss the surgery and what it entails. Are she willing to undergo it? Can she verbalize her feelings? Your child should be at least five years old or have stable ear cartilage. Adult candidates should be free of serious medical conditions, be non-smokers and understand the risks of the procedure.
Ensuring The Patient's Comfort
A general anesthetic is administered to ensure the patient's comfort. An incision is made on the rear of each ear to add or reshape a critical fold in the ear, known as the antihelical fold. Cartilage can be removed from the largest sections of the ear. Any frontal incisions are made within the natural folds of the ear to hide the incision lines. Internal sutures are added to hold the reshaped cartilage in place and the incisions are closed with external sutures.
The ears will be bandaged following your ear pinning surgery. Some pain can be treated with prescription medication. There can be frequent itchiness at first. The key is NOT to remove or scratch the area of the bandages. It may damage the corrected area and require revisionary surgery. The bandages are removed within a few weeks. The Otoplasty results will improve over time as the new appearance looks more natural.
Risks of the otoplasty procedure are minimal but can include skin irregularities, scarring, allergies to the surgical materials, pain, sensation changes, asymmetry, infection, blood clots, bleeding and poor wound healing. Any of these complications may require the need for revisionary surgery.
